Advanced Networks Project

This was a program that was written for my Advanced Networks course with the help of Nicholas Capo. The program is a chat room application that has the ability to host multiple rooms, similar to IRC. I had forgotten about the program, but I am now publishing it for all to enjoy.

APPLICATION DESCRIPTION:

  • A set of applications for operating a series of chat rooms.
  • Clients must only know the address and port of the central registration server in order to get a list of all available rooms, and connect to a room.
  • Once a client has joined a room, he is then able to join the chat already in progress and can see messages sent from every other client.
  • Clients may use the special message "/quit" to leave the room and exit the program.
  • On the back end, a single Registration server must be setup to provide a "directory" service for Rooms.
  • Rooms can be run by anyone on an accessible network, the room must register with a registration server and then clients will be able to connect to it.

GPSMaps 1.7
Projects - GPSMaps
Thursday, 01 March 2012 14:48

Good news, 1.7 is now ready for download.

I believe I have ironed out most of the bugs. As usual, I will keep my eye on the Cacti forums and the comment section here for anything major. I will be releasing a PDF usage guide of sorts, as soon as I can find a free weekend to work on it.

This is a big change from the way previous GPSMap version operated. In short, at the end of each polling cycle, XML and KML files are created, as well as static HTML map header files. This dramatically increase page generation time. Additionally, this greatly reduces the overall stress on the database. (hit every poll cycle vs every page load)

With this change, I can isolate Data generation issues vs browser compatibility issues. I am pleased with this version and I hope you guys will be too.

It does have some new polling hooks, I think they should automatically update with a simple extract and copy. However, I am not 100% positive.

For the next month and a half I will be travelling overseas. Rather than completely fill up my main pages with ramblings about the adventure, please have a look at the "European Adventure" section. I'm sure I will have a wonderful trip and I cant wait to share stories with everyone.

GPSMaps 1.63 Released

Emergency Update 1.63

Google recently removed a Labs project that provided all of the icon files. I have created some icons based on the ones that were provided by Google. I have also removed any reference to the Google servers beyond the loading of the map. If you have any map templates you will need to update them after installing this plugin.

I once again warn that Uninstalling this plugin will remove/delete all GPS data you have saved. Please be careful.

To update this plugin, just copy and replace all files in the GPSMAPS

DD-WRT DNS Loopback
Tech Blog - Web
Monday, 18 July 2011 22:39

This is a slight update to my previous post about the WDS system deployed in my house. At the time I updated primary routers firmware, I lost a feature. The ability to have a DNS loopback was lost. Apparently in newer versions of DD-WRT this feature was broken/removed from the versions updated on the FTP. To clear up, DNS loopback is the ability to enter domain.com and have it point back at the router for querying. I would do this in a local DNS, but I don't use the feature often enough.

So to fix the loopback problem, a firewall rule has to be added.
